Tourism
The Tourism industry is one of the energizers of the world economy, contributing to the development of our country directly, indirectly and in an induced way, impacting the value chains, detonating the social and economic development of the country, as well as the creation of jobs.
Considering the economic contribution of the sector and its transversality, Bancomext has a tourism sector model focused on developing investment projects, relating and identifying investment corridors and competitive tourism centers, and destinations where hotel infrastructure is being developed. As a result of this strategy, the direct loan portfolio in Bancomext for tourism investment is made up of projects in 26 states of the Republic, with a portfolio balance of 37,631 million pesos.
The first-tier channeled credit has contributed to strengthening companies in 26 states of the Republic, distributed in 43% to the southern part of the country, 46% to the Pacific area, and 9% to the central area.
The COVID-19 health contingency significantly affected company operations in the tourism sector, particularly those of Bancomext clients. Practically all hotels in operation closed temporarily as of March 2020. As part of the strategies to maintain the current portfolio, as of March 31, a total of 82 outstanding loans from the tourism portfolio were rescheduled or restructured.
On the other hand, with Bancomext first-tier financial support in the tourism sector, during 2020, 7,100 new hotel rooms were in the construction stage in 7 states in the country, which are to be concluded from 2020 to 2022. Although 3,600 rooms were scheduled to be completed during 2020, various projects were postponed, and their opening was delayed until 2021.
At the end of 2020, the construction of 2,416 new rooms was concluded in Quintana Roo, Nayarit, and Baja California Sur.
The indicators of the first-tier portfolio for 2020, in the Tourism sector, were as follows:
- For the strategic sectors, the Tourism sector portfolio is the most important for total balance in Bancomext’s private sector loan portfolio.
- The balance represented 18.4% of the total first-tier private sector portfolio of Corporate Banking, equivalent to 37,631 million pesos, an increase of 17.4% when compared to 32,066 million pesos in December 2019.
- The sector portfolio generated the most significant contribution to the number of companies benefited in 2020, with 111 representing 22.7% of the total number of companies benefited in Corporate Banking.
- The sector portfolio generated the most important income contribution from financial margins and commissions of the private sector portfolio in Corporate Banking, with 904 million pesos, equivalent to 17.5% of the total income, reflecting the profitability and quality of a long-term portfolio diversified in counterparts, segments and regions. It is important to note that this portfolio showed an increase of 11.2% when compared to 812 million pesos for the same period of the previous year.
- The placement of resources during 2020 amounted to 6,697 million pesos.
- The pipeline portfolio at the end of 2020 amounted to MXN 15,949, with 44 projects under study.
