What is the Mexican Carbon Fund? What should a CDM project include? Main activities to be supported by FOMECAR CDM Project support PIN & PDD eligibility criteria

What is the Mexican Carbon Fund?

It is widely known that the Earth’s atmosphere is experiencing a temperature increase mainly caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which are generated by human activities. The effects on climate change represent nowadays an imperative environmental, political, social and economic challenge to humanity.

The United Nations Organization has implemented several mechanisms to limit or reduce GHG emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. Mexico participates by promoting the development of projects with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which may generate Certified Emission Reductions (CER’s) that can be traded in the carbon market and help the project’s developers to obtain additional income in return.

The Mexican Carbon Fund (FOMECAR) was created as a result of the joined efforts of Mexican institutions in order to provide national companies and public entities with technical and financial support to implement CDM projects, which represent an opportunity for sustainable development and environmental benefits to society.
